Are you addicted to alcohol? Then this diet can help you

This diet could help you to reverse the negative side effects of alcohol

A recent research found that alcohol, and eating animals fats and drugs can cause liver damage and raise cholesterol.

While experts always recommend cutting out alcohol from their diet, or reducing number of units they consume, the damage can be reversed - providing it has not progressed too far.

However, for people who feel they might have over indulged, Nat Hawes, author of Nature Cures said: “The liver is the only internal human organ capable of natural regeneration of lost tissue - as little as 25 per cent of a liver can regenerate into a whole liver if minor damage occurs.

“Steer clear of fatty foods, such as butter, cheese, cream, margarine and meat.

Consumer all colours of fruits and vegetables - papaya and watermelon are especially useful."

The expert also recommended drinking water infused with fig leaves.

Nat Hawes added: “Garlic and onions - chop and allow to stand for ten minutes for the allicin to be produced before eating or cooking.

“Herbal teas - four cups per day - of anise, chamomile, fennel, ginger, ginseng, grape seed extract, reishi mushroom and seaweed.

“Tomatoes - lightly cooked and must be consumed with a very small drop of cold pressed oil or fish. Avocado is good to eat with tomatoes as it has natural plant oils which aid in the absorption of lycopene in tomatoes.”

People are also advised to drink plenty of bottled mineral or filtered water to ‘flush out toxins’.

Alcohol-related liver disease (ARLD) refers to liver damage caused by excess alcohol intake. There are several stages of severity and a range of associated symptoms.

Alarmingly, ARLD doesn't usually cause any symptoms until the liver has been severely damaged - but symptoms can include feeling sick, weight loss, loss of appetite, yellowing of the eyes and skin, swelling in the ankles and tummy and vomiting blood.

Dr Clare Morrison, GP at Med Express UK: “Reversing the damage made to a liver can be difficult but it isn’t completely impossible – depending on the source of the problem.

“Detoxification of the liver can be helped along by loading up on potassium rich foods.

“Potassium helps to lower your systolic blood pressure, lower your cholesterol and helps support a healthy cardiovascular system…on top of helping you cleanse your liver!”

However, the GP said reversing a fatty liver is definitely something that is achievable.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the term for a range of conditions caused by a build-up of fat in the liver.

It's usually seen in people who are overweight or obese and while it isn’t immediately dangerous, the condition can lead to liver cirrhosis - scarring of the liver caused by continuous, long-term liver damage.

Scar tissue replaces healthy tissue in the liver and prevents the liver from working properly.

The damage caused by cirrhosis can't be reversed and can eventually become so extensive that your liver stops functioning. This is called liver failure.

“Fatty liver is one of the most common causes for abnormal liver function in the UK,” said Dr Morrison.

"Reversing fatty liver includes minimising carbohydrate intake, drinking less alcohol or cutting it out completely and increasing your intake of protein.

"It’s also advised to start taking a good liver tonic but do make sure you ask your doctor which they would recommend.

“It is recommended however that before you change your diet or routine too drastically that you do consult your doctor as they might be able to help find the most suited method to your lifestyle.”

This comes after it was revealed how much you can really drink on the gout diet.
