NASA revealed plane of 2027

NASA has been revealed futuristic plane of 2027.

The government agency has revealed plans for passenger planes faster than the speed of sound.

The "double bubble" D8 was developed by Aurora Flight Sciences and MIT researchers in 2008.

But now NASA has been given a whopping £2.19million to bring one of the models to life. They expect the radical new design to be used as a regular flight service by 2017.

The twin-hull plane can accommodate 180 passengers and can reach speeds of 582mph – breaking the sound barrier.

Even better, the new super plane is good for the environment as fuel burn could be reduced by up to 70% and noise and emissions could be lowered by almost 90 per cent.

On a regular flight from LA to New York (2,475 miles), the D8 would use 2,095 less gallons of fuel than the current most efficient plane.

The aircraft, which can travel 3,500 miles at a time, was inspired by the Boeing 707 from 1958, which opened up the world of travel to the masses.

Aurora is aiming to develop the 1:2 scale demonstrator X-plane in the next three years.

Michael Rogers from Nasa's Ames Research Centre said the efficiency is derived from the plane’s wings.

He explained: "The idea there is to take some of the lift that you would normally get from the wings and try and move that to the fuselage.

"Another thing that's done to enable laminar flow on this vehicle is to reduce the sweep of the wings.

"It is easier to maintain laminar flow if the wings, instead of being swept back like a lot of modern commercial transports, are more sort of perpendicular to the side of the body of the plane."

Brazilian airline Embraer have also got a plane of the future in the design stages. With floor-to-ceiling windows and sunroofs, the Kyoto Airship's design means every passenger would get a panoramic view of the skies.

There will also be a luxurious lounge area with leather sofas, widescreen TVs and Blu-ray players.

The flying apartment will even feature a fully-fitted kitchen and master bedroom with queen-sizd bed and ensuite with walk-in shower.
