Twitter co-founder and chief executive Jack Dorsey had his account on the social media site briefly suspended following an "internal mistake".
Mr Dorsey tweeted on Tuesday night that he was "just setting up my twttr...again (account suspension was an internal mistake)" after his profile had disappeared from the site for around 15 minutes, with those attempting to reach the account met with a message informing them the account had been suspended.
The account is now active again, and all Mr Dorsey's previous tweets and followers have been restored after initial reports suggested they had been deleted.
The very first tweet posted to the site in 2006 was by Mr Dorsey, and also referred to him "setting up my twttr".
Only Twitter itself is able to suspend user accounts - predominantly in cases of violations of the site's usage policies. However users can choose to deactivate their account at any time.
Twitter has not commented further on what caused the "internal mistake".
The incident comes as the site struggles to draw new users and reports suggest it has been looking for a buyer. The site also recently announced the loss of 9% of its global workforce and the shutting down of video app Vine following disappointing financial results.
