Mesut Ozil Is Just A Step Away To Become A Legend

Mesut Ozil

Arsene Wenger says the playmaker now reminds him of Gunners great Dennis Bergkamp and Ozil’s stunning individual goal against Ludogorets this week went a long way to justifying the comparison.

But Wenger insists while the Dutchman’s 11 years in north London confirmed Bergkamp’s prominent place in the club’s history, Ozil still has a long way to go.

The German arrived from Real Madrid in 2013 and has yet to commit his future beyond the end of his current contract that expires in 2018.

Asked if Ozil can become a legend, Wenger said: "I think so, if he commits.

"Dennis Bergkamp committed for a long period and played until he was 38. I hope we have 10 more years of Ozil. That depends.

"To become a legend at the club you need to stay for a long time.

"Being a legend like Dennis Bergkamp…If you stay two years you would not be a legend."

And the manager added: "We are working on it (Ozil’s contract), we are working on it."

But while Ozil’s long-term future remains uncertain, the player’s emergence after an inconsistent spell at Arsenal has been confirmed this season.

Wenger admits he took time to come to terms with the Premier League, but believes Ozil is now has the killer instinct to go with his undoubted talent.

Ahead of tomorrow’s north London derby clash with Tottenham, the manager said: "He is more mature, he is 28. The difference today is he focuses more on efficiency.

"The main transformation we got from him, he makes more runs in behind to score goals.

"I convinced him that he has it in his locker to score goals. He was more focused on giving and looking. Today he understands that he can have those qualities but be on the end of things as well.

"You notice all the finishers are killers. That means they keep their nerve in front of goal, and he has that."

But Wenger warned against placing too much expectation on Ozil’s shoulders ahead of the visit of Spurs.

He added: "Of course he can be dangerous but in big games there is always a lot of expectation on him.

"But we must not think he will do it (on his own), we have to produce a team performance.

"We have plenty of players who can make a difference on the day and not expect Ozil to deliver anything special."
