The stylish Adam city car is Vauxhall’s addition to a sector dominated by the likes of the ever-cool Mini, and the newly launched Unlimited version is the Brit maker’s latest bid to attract young, funky buyers who covet more input in their model’s design and kit.
Based on a shortened Corsa platform, the Adam is touted as a ‘blank canvas’ by its maker. The Unlimited model is not limited to a prescribed paint scheme or alloys, and the various combinations of spec and styling accessories can give a mind-boggling selection of results. Virtually every aspect of the car – body, roof, grille bar, mirrors – can be specced in different colours, while the buyer can also choose their wheel size and style. Seat material, badging… you name it, you can spec it. The only restriction is your level of taste.
One area that is limited is what’s under the bonnet. You can choose from 1.2 or 1.4-litre petrol engines or our test car’s more powerful, 113bhp 1.0-litre three-cylinder. Unlimited is the cheapest trim available with this characterful motor. The triple sounds great, as ever, and is mostly smooth and quiet. Keep it buzzing along at 2000rpm-plus and it returns sprightly performance.
As you’d expect from a car with such a short wheelbase, the Adam Unlimited’s cabin is a little cramped in the rear – although headroom is surprisingly good – and the boot isn’t exactly big. The truncated length also makes itself felt over rough surfaces, giving the handling and ride a slightly unsettled feel.
Regardless, the driving experience can be pretty good fun, and it is boosted by the Adam’s great city-driving credentials. The Unlimited has plenty of kit, and its customisation options are of great appeal. This time, Vauxhall’s made it personal.
