The 61-year-old Braveheart actor has revealed he welcomed a baby with girlfriend Rosalind Ross, 26 on Saturday.
The couple are said to be "over the moon" with their new arrival.
A rep for the US actor has confirmed the birth to People magazine – claiming the couple have named their son Lars Gerard Gibson and that he came in weighing albs 5oz.
A source also told the magazine: “They’re thrilled and Lars is adorable. Their family is all around them and Mel is over the moon.
"They’re home and everybody is healthy and happy!”
Mel already has eight children from previous relationships.
However, Lars is the first child for him and Rosalind, a former champion equestrian vaulter and writer.
He was previously married to Robyn Moore between 1980 and 2006, with the couple having seven children together.
These are Hannah, 37, Edward, 35, Christian, 34, William, 31, Louis, 28, Milo, 26 and Thomas, 18.
The star then dated Russian pianist Oksana Grigorieva after his divorce.
The pair becoming parents to six-year-old Lucia.
Mel has been dating Rosalind since 2014.
