Sky Announces Major Changes - But Will It Affect You

Sky

Sky has announced a slew of changes coming to new and existing customers.

The satellite television company made the announcement during its quarterly earnings call this morning.

For the first time, Sky is allowing users to watch without a dish.

Sky Q will soon work without the need for a satellite dish mounted on your outside wall – a move that, Sky says, will see millions of new homes able to enjoy the Sky TV service.

The updated service will deliver Sky satellite television over a broadband connection.

The service is expected to launch in the UK in 2018, Sky confirmed.

Elsewhere, Sky made an announcement that is likely to appeal to long-term Sky subscribers.

The UK broadcaster is introducing a new loyalty scheme that will reward and recognise members based on how long they’ve been with Sky.

The programme will award exclusive experiences and benefits to customers, the firm says.

Sky's upcoming loyalty scheme will be included in the new My Sky app.

The My Sky app also lets customers check their broadband speed, review their monthly bill, change how and when they pay, and get help and support with simple step by step videos and articles. Sky has not revealed when the My Sky app will launch.

However it did confirm some new statistics around its next-generation satellite television service, Sky Q.

Sky says there are now more than one million boxes in around 600,000 homes in the UK with customers watching 10 per cent more television when compared to those with Sky+ HD.

The broadcaster also confirmed that an upcoming software update to the box would bring a host of new features to customers.

The software upgrade will bring voice search to Sky Q, along with greater personalisation and the ability to record six shows while watching a seventh live.

Sky UK Chief Executive Stephen van Rooyen said: "This year is about giving our customers even more quality, choice and value.

"We’re planning to launch our Sky TV service without the need for a satellite dish for the very first time, giving millions more homes the chance to enjoy TV with Sky Q.

"We are continuing to build our European TV production studio, with 100 original series going into production.

"And with innovations like the My Sky app, we are finding new ways to make our customers’ lives simpler."
