A study by UK-based HIS Hair Clinic asked 2,000 men about what they feared the most when it came to ageing.
And no, it wasn’t impotence. It was hair loss.
An impressive 94% of men said going bald was their number one worry, followed by impotence, going grey, gaining weight, losing teeth, needing glasses and going deaf.
The worry isn’t without reason. An estimated 80 million American men have experienced baldness as they’ve aged.
And in the UK? Nearly 40% of men will go bald which makes us the fifth highest count of smooth-headed men per capita.
However, all is not lost as men may soon be able to take a test to find out if they will lose their hair.
A recent study conducted the largest analysis of male pattern baldness that has ever been done – and the finding could mean a cure for baldness.
The study concluded men inherited their baldness from their mother’s side of the family, and that 80% of baldness is down to genetics.
The test will study a man’s genes to determine whether they have the genetic make-up that will leave them bald.
According to the study, it is the male sex hormones including androgen that cause hair loss – having too much of this hormone can make your hair fall out as they increase hair follicle sensitivity.
“We are still a long way from making an accurate prediction for an individual’s hair loss pattern,” lead investigator Dr Riccardo Marioni, from the University of Edinburgh explained.
“However, these results take us one step closer. The findings pave the way for an improved understanding of the genetic causes of hair loss.”
