Ten years on, this year’s iPhone 8 looks set to be a full reinvention for the billion-selling gadget – and the latest detail to emerge is that it will have a ‘revolutionary’ front-facing infrared camera.
Trusted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities – behind many previous accurate Apple leaks – says that the device will have a depth-sensing infrared module on the front.
This ‘3D’ sensor could be used to add people’s faces into apps or games, or for facial recognition – and the analyst describes it as ‘revolutionary’.
It would use an infrared beam to sense the depth and position of nearby objects – and use that information in images.
Multiple reports from respected analysts and industry sources have suggested this year’s iPhone 8 – expected in September, as is traditional from Apple – will be a near-complete overhaul.
