Facebook Tests Dislike Button - But You Definitely Might Not Like The Feature

Facebook

There's finally a dislike button, what we've all been waiting for - well, sort of.

When you hover over your friends chat in Facebook Messenger you can 'react' to what they are saying.

As part of the test, when you're in a chat thread, you can tap the emoji button and pick the thumbs up aka the Like button, or a thumbs down aka the Dislike button.

There are other reactions available too, like the heart eyes, wow, lol, sad or angry face.

Everyone in the thread can see the reaction as it appears right before the line in the message - so it's attached to that particular comment.

You can tap it to see the who has reacted how to each message too.

“We’re always testing ways to make Messenger more fun and engaging,” Facebook told TechCrunch in a statement. “This is a small test where we enable people to share an emoji that best represents their feelings on a message.”

That means not everyone has the ability to Dislike something for now, but if people react well to the change it could be rolled out to all users.

The notable change to the normal reaction list, is the Dislike button.

Users have called for a way to show their discontent and disagreement with post for awhile, but Facebook has always said it doesn't plan to introduce a button.

The company has said before it thinks it would introduce too much negativity to the site, and people can comment to share their thoughts.

Facebook said this new Dislike feature is seen as more of a "no" button. Messenger is used for planning and sorting out a date to meet so these new reactions could be a quick way of seeing who is free and getting agreement on a date/time. There's also a yes/no option.

So for now no real Dislike button, just a thumbs down.

Facebook launched Reactions a year ago, with more than 300 billion being sent so far. Love is the most frequently used.
