New Nokia Smartphone Would Run On Android 7.0 Nougat On Startup

Nokia looks set to continue its run of releasing new devices with its first smartphone running Android Nougat.

The iconic Finnish mobile firm announced its return to the mobile market with the Nokia 6 earlier this month, the first new device released under the stewardship of HMD Global, and now looks set to reveal another new smartphone soon.

However once again, the next new Nokia phone looks like it may not be a powerhouse, although it will come with some great new software.

The news comes from benchmarking site GFXbench, which carried details of tests reportedly belonging to an all-new Nokia smartphone.

The Nokia Heart is not a major step up in terms of hardware power or screen size, but will apparently be the first Nokia device to run Android Nougat 7.0.

Specifically, the information shows that the Nokia Heart will run an “Android HMD Edition” of Nougat, suggesting the company is planning to introduce a number of new features and additions to keep its own stamp on the device.

Several other companies have chosen this route so far with their Android Nougat devices, particularly Huawei, which bundled its Mate 9 device with a combined Android Nougat/EMEI 5.0 software offering.

Elsewhere, it seems that the Nokia Heart will share the same Snapdragon 430 processor seen in the company’s previous device, meaning that once again it won’t trouble other Android flagship phones such as the Samsung Galaxy S7 and the OnePlus 3T.

The Nokia Heart will come with a 5.2in HD display, as well as a 12MP rear camera and 7MP front lens, cementing its place in the mid-range market.

There’s also 1.8GB of RAM and 16GB of storage, although only 9GB will be available due to internal usage.

The listing doesn’t include any information on a release date or price just yet, but it’s likely that Nokia will launch at least one smartphone at Mobile World Congress next month.

Nokia has been enjoying a rather successful return to the smartphone market, if the company’s news on its first device launch is to be believed.

The Nokia 6, which is only on sale in China for the time being, reportedly sold out all its initial stock in just a minute.

Over a million people have also reportedly already registered their interest in buying the phone on JD.com, the online Chinese retailer that has exclusive rights for the device.

The Nokia 6 is currently available for 1699 Yuan (around £200), putting it far below the price of other flagship devices on the market.

So far, Nokia has also confirmed that it is working on several other devices away from smartphones.

Reports have claimed that the company is soon set to announce an expansion of its virtual reality products, as well as the launch of a 'Digital Health' product, most likely a wearable device, and an expansion in its mobile and smart car patents.

Earlier this month, a patent filing revealed that Nokia is also working on a handset that is able to fold in half.

Diagrams showing the device show a ‘clamshell’ hinged design much like a make-up mirror, opening up to reveal a screen that bends in half when closed.
